The Lord Is My Strength | psalm 28:7

Injury Note

Posted by webmaster On December - 8 - 2006

This is just a note for myself really. It is Friday and I am still battling this cold. I head to the doctor today. I hate that because that usually means medicine. I just do not like medicine. Arggg.

On a positive note, the right shoulder continues to strengthen and improve.

The injury to it was most peculiar and I dicovered that the injury was apparently to my shoulder/trapezius tiein. Or so it seems. I notince that in certain potitions my right trap was really hurting me, where it ties into the shoulder. I am not a doctor or course, and I intend to get a referral to a specialist to be sure, but I am fairly confident the injury was more in this area than to the front of the shoulder…..

At any even, I began a strange movement to stengthen the trap. It is a most strange movement amd I mention it here in hopes that it might help someone else. First, a modified form of the movement:

Remember that old “exercise” girls use to do in school when you were a kid? “We must, we must, we must build up our busts”. Remember that? Or am I the only one lucky enough to have gone to a school where the girls wanted huge tits? But I digress…..

The exercise that these girls performed was an isometric one, in which the heels of the palms of each hand are placed together, hands held close to the chest and you press the hands together in much the same way you would if you were trying to squeeze a basketball in an effort to pop it. Does that make sense?

The above movement, when done properly, actually creates great strength in the chest and shoulder muscles as well as improving joint integrity in that region. The amount of pressure you can generate increases over time, though it is hard to measure because you are pressing againts, well, yourself. But the same movement, if modified slightly, can greatly strength the shoulder and traps, completely taking the chest out of it. Here is what you do::

The idea here is to place the heels of the palms of your hands together as in the first movement, however in this instance the hands are not placed in front of your chest, but instead behind the back of our head.

So, raise your hands straight over head in surrender position. Then, lower both hands down behind the head, elbows out to the sides as though you wear assuming the position for the cops in order to be searched, but instead of locking your fingers together behind your head, simply put the heels of the palms together and with elbows out to the sides, press like crazy! But only for a count of 5-10 seconds. That’s it. Now do it for 2-3 sets and you are done.

You will feel weak at this initially. It places you in a disadvantageous position where you have little leverage, and there is no way to bare down and cheat your way through it. Yet you will get stronger and you will be able to tell that you are generating more pressure over a couple days and weeks time.
