Leonid Taranenko Revisited

The name of Leonid Taranenko might not raise an eyebrow in most social circles, but to anyone who is a strength aficionado the name of Leonid Taranenko is likely to inspire gasps, pauses of silence as well as more than a few bent knees from time to time. In short, the man is not only a legend in the sport of Olympic Weight Lifting, but he is simply one of the strongest men to have ever walked on the face of the planet. When all is said and done, he will go down as one of the top ten strongest men to have ever lived.

pyrros2One of the most popular Greek athletes who has ever lived is weightlifting sensation Pyrros Dimas who, after winning three consecutive gold medals, finished his Olympic career with a bronze medal in 2004. Dimas, who routinely lifted more than three times his body weight during his prime, has won more Olympic medals in the sport of weightlifting than any athlete to date. Not bad for a guy who weighed only 185 pounds.

Weightlifting can be a dangerous sport. The Snatch and also the Clean and Jerk are potentially career ending movements if they are not performed properly. The slightest miscalculation can result in disaster for shoulders, elbows, back and knees.

The Overhead Squat is of the best movements you can do with a barbell to not only strengthen and develop every muscle in your body, but increase balance, flexibility and speed.

The overhead squat is a demanding, but rewarding, whole-body exercise. It builds strength and flexibility in the shoulders and core, espeically the lower back, as well as the legs. It improves balance and coordination. In Dan John’s words, it “makes the body one piece”.

Leonid Taranenko 265.5 WR Clean and Jerk

This is unbelieveable. I mean, I believe it, but it is unbelievable. Know what I mean?

In fact, a year later, Taranenko nailed 266! That’s kilograms folks. 585+lbs.
